Kitchen Staples I Can’t Live Without

In the realm of cooking, there are certain ingredients that transcend mere pantry essentials and become irreplaceable companions in the kitchen. These staples add depth, flavor, and versatility to a myriad of dishes, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary. I’ve really made it a goal of mine to get back into the kitchen and start trying new recipes again. It’s been a struggle to reignite that passion, but I finally feel like I’m getting back on track. So today, we’re exploring a curated list of kitchen staples that I simply cannot imagine my kitchen being without. These staples are the threads that weave together some delicious and memorable dishes. From the fiery kick of chili crisp to the creamy indulgence of European butter, each ingredient plays a unique role in transforming ordinary meals. Hopefully you’ll agree with me about what to always have on hand to make cooking a pleasurable and tasty experience, or maybe you’ll be inspired to stock up on some new staples for your own kitchen.

Olive Oil

No kitchen staple list is complete without the golden elixir of the Mediterranean – olive oil. I honestly don’t even know how many bottles I have. Its rich, fruity flavor and myriad health benefits make it an indispensable ingredient in my cooking. From drizzling over salads to sautéing vegetables and searing proteins, the versatility of olive oil knows no bounds. It is important to not skimp. Be sure to invest in a high-quality extra virgin olive oil for an authentic taste that enhances the essence of your dishes.

Fly By Jing Chili Crisp

In recent years, one condiment has taken the culinary world by storm – chili crisp. A fragrant blend of crispy garlic, onions, and chili flakes suspended in rich, aromatic oil, chili crisp is a game-changer. Its versatility is unmatched, adding a delightful crunch and a burst of heat to everything from noodles and stir-fries to soups and even avocado toast. This fiery elixir has earned its permanent place in my kitchen and I use it constantly to add a little extra flavor to my dishes - especially my go-to salad dressing.

3 Kinds of Salt

Salt is the unsung hero of the culinary world, and having a trio of salt varieties in your pantry can elevate your dishes to new heights. The Holy Trinty of Salt is Sea Salt, Kosher Salt, and Maldon Salt. Sea salt has a coarse texture which adds a satisfying crunch and enhances the natural flavors of ingredients. Kosher salt is perfect for seasoning during cooking, while flaky Maldon salt provides a finishing touch to dishes, imparting a delicate burst of salinity. Trust me, Maldon Salt on chocolate chip cookies is incredible.

Canned Tomatoes

This may seem sacrilegious coming from me, but canned tomatoes can be a lifesaver. Whether stewed, crushed, or fire-roasted, they are the basis for so many quick sauces and soups. Their intense flavor and convenience make them an absolute essential for quick and delicious meals. Before judging me I stick with the tried and true favorites: Cento, Muir Organic (for fire-roasted), and Mutti. The A-Team of canned tomatoes.

European Butter

European butter is a creamy indulgence I love. With its higher fat content and creamy texture, European butter brings unparalleled richness to baked goods, sauces, and spreads. Whether slathered on warm bread or used in the creation of flaky pastries, this butter variety adds a touch of luxury to everything. I always have some soft in the butter keeper at the ready for warm, fresh bread.

Parmesan Cheese

No list of kitchen staples - especially for an Italian- is complete without Parmesan cheese – the king of umami. Its nutty, salty, and savory profile makes it a versatile ingredient for adding depth to pasta dishes, risottos, salads, and more. I usually have a block, some grated, and some shaved because I’m never sure exactly which one I’m going to want. Plus, once you have freshly grated, it’s hard to go back to anything else.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

I love sweets and when the sweet tooth beckons that's where cookie dough comes in. Having a roll or batch of high-quality cookie dough in the freezer provides a quick and effortless escape to the realm of sweet indulgence. I change out the dough from time to time so there is something new to choose or savor. Whether baked into warm, gooey cookies or eaten straight from the spoon, cookie dough is a comforting kitchen staple that satisfies dessert cravings with minimal effort.
