The Art of Wine and Cheese Pairings

Everyone always loves to say things go together like peanut butter and jelly, but there is definitely a better combination. Wine and cheese: two staples of indulgence that, when paired correctly, elevate each other to new heights. As someone who simply enjoys a good glass of wine and a savory bite of cheese, I’ve explored many a pairing. You don’t need to be a sommelier or a cheesemonger to appreciate the magic of matching flavors. Honestly, there are entire Instagram accounts of wine pairings with everything from potato chips to Halloween candy and sugar cookies. I appreciate all of them so I’m sharing some classic pairings that are not only my favorites, but no brainer go-tos for evening snacks or parties.

Aged Cheddar and Cabernet Sauvignon

Let’s start with a bold classic. Aged cheddar, with its sharp, nutty profile, pairs perfectly with the robust and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. I tried this combination at a wine tasting and it truly made the Cabernet Sauvignon hit a different note. The tannins in the wine cut through the richness of the cheddar, while the cheese softens the wine’s intensity to create a harmonious balance. It’s a great combination for a cozy night in with a good book or a hearty conversation with friends.

Havarti and Rosé

As the Queen of Rosé, of course one of my pairings has to feature it. It was honestly a toss up between Havarti and Feta. Havarti and Rosé is a combination for those who prefer something lighter and much creamier. Havarti is buttery and slightly tangy which compliments the fruity flavors of rosé. Together, they create a refreshing combination that is ideal for warm afternoons or casual gatherings. Think picnic blankets, sunshine, and this easygoing pairing.

Goat Cheese and Sauvignon Blanc

Who doesn’t love goat cheese? If you want a fresh and tangy bite, goat cheese with Sauvignon Blanc is a must-try. The citrusy, herbaceous notes of Sauvignon Blanc mirror the zesty creaminess of goat cheese, making every bite and sip feel like a burst of springtime. This pairing is light, bright, and incredibly satisfying - great for starting a meal or enjoying as an appetizer.

Parmigiano-Reggiano and Blanc de Blancs

There is not a day that goes by where I am not eating something with parmesan or a piece plucked off the block. I constantly joke about purchasing one of the giant wheels from Whole Foods and just snacking on it. This pairing exudes elegance. Parmigiano-Reggiano, the “King of Cheeses,” meets its royal counterpart in Blanc de Blancs. The nutty, crystalline texture of Parmigiano-Reggiano pairs perfectly with the effervescent, citrus-driven profile of Blanc de Blancs. The bubbles cleanse the palate, while the cheese adds depth and complexity. This is a pairing fit for celebrations or just moments you want a little bite of indulgence.

A Few Tips for Pairing Success

  1. Match Intensity: Pair bold wines with strong cheeses and delicate wines with mild cheeses. One shouldn’t overpower the other.

  2. Experiment: Of course, suggestions are a great starting point, but don’t fear unconventional combinations. Sometimes, surprises are the most delightful part.

  3. Temperature Matters: Serve wine and cheese at the right temperature to bring out the best in their flavors.

Exploring wine and cheese pairings is as much about the experience as it is about the taste. Grab a cutting board, a bottle of wine, and a selection of cheeses, and embark on your own flavorful journey. Cheers to discovering your own perfect pairings!
