Five Favorites: January

I know all of us, especially the chronically online, have felt like January has been about 7 years too long. Even before my life changing January of 2023, I have always despised January. There is always this feeling of optimism for about a day that anything is possible and it’s a brand new page. Be whoever you want to be! Set the goals! Make the resolution! And then a few days in, the slow realization that nothing has really changed starts to creep in. January just feels dreary and cold. I mean, there is a reason Blue Monday occurs in January, right? It’s just the Sunday of months.

As much as I hate being such a Debbie Downer about it, January is just a struggle. I’ve struggled to find my footing and really find the passion I have for things - especially creating. I’ve struggled with immense imposter syndrome, my self confidence has taken a beating, and it’s been harder and harder to feel like myself. Luckily, I think that is finally turning around. I know warmer days are coming. The sun will continue to shine, and I need to step through doors rather than convincing myself I don’t know how the doorknob works.

But you’re not here for my personal thoughts, you’re here for recommendations, and I’ve got them. I’ve tried to put myself on a spending freeze, but it appears I’ve hit a nesting phase where my priority now is organizing and decorating my apartment. An interesting turn of events, but maybe it’s because I feel like if I add another hanger to my closet the bar is going to finally collapse. Nevertheless, I’ve put together Five Favorites from January if you’re looking for new stuff to cook, watch, or buy!

Ultima Replenisher Hydration Packets

$22, Amazon

I saw these recommended in a post about wellness online and they mentioned how great they tasted so I knew I had to try them. I picked up a packet at the store on a whim and was hooked. My favorites are the Peach Bellini and Lemonade so far and I love that they genuinely do taste good. They don’t have that powdery, chemical-like taste and they aren’t chalky either. Definitely the best electrolyte packs I’ve tasted.

One Pot Pesto Chicken and Rice

The Modern Proper

I gifted myself an Always pan for Christmas so I’ve been trying to make new things and challenge myself. Chicken always makes me nervous to cook, but when I saw this I really wanted to try it and I’m happy that I did. It was so delicious, easy to make, and includes a few of my favorite ingredients right now.

Shani Darden Weightless Moisturizer

$50, Sephora

Running out of moisturizer is a nightmare, but one positive is I get to try a new one. I love this one because it really is lightweight, doesn’t make my face shiny, and I can wear it all day without my face feeling oily or greasy. This moisturizer hydrates my face just the right amount whereas other brands can go south fairly quickly especially with such drastic weather changes.

Wood Salt Cellar

$36, Zara Home

If there is one thing I hate, it’s a salt container. They are just so freaking ugly and a salt shaker can only go so far. Born out of a necessity (aka the salt shaker didn’t fit in my spice cabinet), I decided it was finally time to get a salt cellar. It’s frankly one of the simplest switches I’ve ever made and makes a gigantic difference. Not only is it easier to scoop out with measuring spoons, but salting while cooking is a breeze. I love the acacia wood and the aesthetics are on point.

The Traitors

Streaming on Peacock

I was a little skeptical about this show but it did have so many of my favorite reality competition show contestants on it, so I had to give it a chance and I’m thankful I did. It is some of the best television on right now. It’s funny, there is drama, and strategy. And I can’t believe I find myself being so enthralled with it week after week.
