Destinations for Soaking Up Winter Sun

Being from Arizona there really isn’t all that much to complain about. Sure, it’s way too cold and many times we have to deal with the most rain of the year. One thing I do enjoy is the winter sun. Winter doesn't have to be synonymous with chilly winds and snow-covered landscapes. It’s a time where everyone needs to knock out the winter blues and embark on a sun-drenched journey to a paradise. Whether it's the mesmerizing Musandam Peninsula or the tranquil shores of St. Kitts, each destination on this travel list offers a unique blend of warmth, adventure, and relaxation. I for one would love to embrace the winter sun and let these dreamy escapes become the backdrop for many memories. But, alas, the winter vibes are still strong so rather I’m just making a list of incredible destinations for soaking up the winter rays.

St. Kitts, West Indies

St. Kitts, part of the Lesser Antilles, embraces a relaxed Caribbean vibe with stunning scenery. Sunset Reef, a boutique hotel with seven suites and eleven rooms, provides an awe-inspiring perch above the Caribbean Sea. Its glistening infinity pool and panoramic views make it an ideal base to explore the island's laid-back beauty by train or boat.

The Algarve, Portugal

Another destination boasting over 300 days of sunshine annually, The Algarve in Portugal is a sun-seeker's paradise. Experience the roar of waterfalls in the Monchique Mountains, witness migrating birds in Ria Formosa Natural Park, and enjoy blissfully quiet beaches like Quinta do Lago. Explore the whitewashed towns of Faro, Lagos, or Tavira for a delightful winter escape.

Musandam Peninsula, Oman

Oman, with its dramatic landscapes and serene atmosphere, offers a unique escape from the bustling crowds of other Middle Eastern destinations. The Musandam Peninsula, in particular, is a visual masterpiece, showcasing the meeting point of towering mountains, emerald seas, and pristine white-sand beaches. Nestled within this haven is the Six Senses Zighy Bay, a village-like resort featuring private pool villas and suites adorned with natural stone and timber, creating personal oases along sandy pathways.

Riviera Maya, Mexico

The powdery beaches and lush jungles of Mexico's Riviera Maya beckon travelers seeking a perfect blend of relaxation and cultural exploration. It’s one of the hottest destinations of the year. The recently renovated Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, is a sanctuary of tranquility, honoring Mexican heritage in its design. The cenote-inspired swimming pool, adorned with turquoise-hued tiles, offers a serene space to sip mezcal in the shade of swaying palm trees.

Soufriere, St. Lucia

St. Lucia's quieter southwest, with the enchanting town of Soufrière, offers a captivating winter escape. Overlooking the iconic Pitons, Anse Chastanet provides a jungle-like estate with a beach and a marine reserve, offering spa experiences and impressive cuisine against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea. February’s winds make the perfect time for visiting the waterfalls and hot springs.

Maldives

The Maldives is a timeless destination that boasts perfect weather year-round. The enchanting islands, with their sandy islets and luxurious resorts, offer unparalleled bliss. Whether you choose the rustic charm of Gili Lankanfushi or the secluded retreat of Alila Kothaifaru, each promises a heavenly experience. There is no bad time to visit the Maldives and despite what many say, there is no getting bored of the islands. They are truly hard to beat. There are lagoons and natural islands with jungle-like vegetation in between villas. There is plenty of marine life to take a peak of among the corals.

Cyprus

With over 340 days of sunshine a year, Cyprus stands out as a warm winter destination in the Mediterranean. Explore the snow-dusted Troödos mountains and coastal areas that stay warm and dry. Larnaka is the place if you’re looking to spot flamingos enjoying their winter home and then head west to see historic treasures like the 3rd-Century Tombs of the Kings. Should the unruly Mediterranean weather take hold, there is the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia where you can also pop into a cozy taverna for a long lunch.

Canary Islands

For dyed-in-the-wool sun seekers, the Canary Islands offer diverse experiences. While Lanzarote and Fuerteventura provide relief in summer, Tenerife and Gran Canaria shine in winter. The islands have made great strides in positioning themselves as a cultural hub with art galleries and concert halls. The capital, Las Palmas, is a foodie destination and the landscape offers plenty of hiking for outdoor lovers. The Bed and Chic hotel in Las Palmas is a cool 12-room spot that has Ace Hotel vibes while over in Tenerife, Hotel San Rogue is an 18th-century house where dining and lounging take place around a gorgeous courtyard pool.
