Lessons In Mixing Personal Style + Home Design

We have all spent some time kicking back and indulging in those addictive HGTV makeover shows. You know the ones where designers unveil those jaw-dropping rooms that we instantly wish we had. Not to mention all the time we spend curating Places and Spaces Pinterest boards, reading decorating blogs, and websites. Most of the time it feels between these mediums everyone just has some It's like they have some kind of secret sauce I just don’t have. A home is a canvas for making a place that is your own slice of paradise. It’s an extension of your personality and how you represent yourself.

There are days when I wish I could break down walls and start over with decorating and everything, but since I currently can’t, I have to work with what I’ve got. Drawing a line between personal style and interior design can feel hard sometimes. A home can be not only stylish but uniquely your own. I’ve been spending a lot of time reading and trying to figure out the best way to incorporate both and have a space that is exciting, special and reflects who I am - even if that is constantly growing and changing. Here are a few of my favorite tips I’ve learned recently.

Get to Know Yourself

When it comes to design style, I can be all over the place. There are just so many different things and design aesthetics I love. Take the time to explore your own tastes and preferences. Think about your personality traits and the vibes that resonate with you. Are you outgoing and bold, or do you lean towards a more relaxed and minimalist approach? The better you understand yourself, the easier it becomes to select decor elements that match your unique style. Take some time to write your personality into words – it'll be really helpful when taking on design updates.

Incorporate Your interests

This is when decor and style can get fun. A home should be a window into one’s passions and interests. Consider the things that truly make you happy. Whether it's travel, music, art, or a deep love for all neon, find creative ways to weave these passions into your decor. For instance, if you're a globe-trotter at heart, showcase your adventures with travel souvenirs, global textiles, and travel-themed art. Your home becomes not just a living space but a visual diary of your life.

Keep It Real

Just like with fashion, home trends come and go. Think back to the avocado-green kitchen appliances of the 1970s. Trends can be oh-so-tempting, but the real magic happens when you make design choices that genuinely resonate with you. Remember, it's your space, your sanctuary. While flipping through those glossy design magazines is fantastic for inspiration, it's even more important to trust your own instincts. What feels good to you will make you feel great in your home, day in and day out. Plus, you won’t find yourself wanting to change things up or redecorate again too quickly.

Avoid a Theme

Once you've discovered your style, keep the decor subtle and abstract. Avoid getting caught up in a theme, as this can make your space feel more like a movie set than a real, lived-in home. If you're going for a beachy vibe, let the colors of the sand and sea inspire your palette, and incorporate natural elements like driftwood and seashells. By hinting at your inspiration, you create a timeless, elegant design that doesn't feel kitschy.

Start Small

Even though it crosses my mind constantly, the idea of a complete home overhaul can be overwhelming, so it’s best to start small. Accessories and decorative lighting can breathe new life into your space without a major investment. Swap out a light fixture in the dining room, or add a charming vase for your fresh flowers – these quick changes can instantly infuse your personality into your home. Collectibles, like unique art pieces, coffee-table books, throw pillows, and cozy blankets, can all convey your style with flair. It’s easy to switch them out, change things up, and adapt to your changing interests and styles.

Incorporate a DIY

If you’re creative, embrace your inner artist! DIY projects can be a fantastic way to personalize your home. Create custom artwork, handcrafted pillows, or transform old furniture into unique, eye-catching pieces. The satisfaction of saying, "I made this," adds a level of personal connection to your decor that you won't find in store-bought items. Your DIY creations are like fingerprints, leaving a distinct mark on your space. Plus they are uniquely your own no matter where you find inspiration which honestly adds a little something extra to your space.

Continue to Evolve

Like I mentioned previously, just like with trends we continue to evolve over time. Something we enjoy right now might not be something we enjoy 6 months or 1 year from now. Your journey in creating a personalized home doesn't stop after initial design. Recognize that your tastes may evolve over time, just as you do. Your living space is a reflection of your ever-changing self, so don't be afraid to adapt and modify it as your preferences shift. Your home is your storybook, a canvas that can always be updated to align with your present self and your future aspirations. Make it timeless yet ever-evolving, just like you.
