Wardrobe Basics to Upgrade In 2022

I love a good wardrobe basic. The staples that not only have longevity but are just plain essential. They are the core of any closet for their function and versatility. But they aren’t often updated or upgraded - some aren’t anyway. What I mean is, when you find a basic tee that you love you probably only replace it after you’ve worn it into oblivion and it’s washed out or damaged. Or, if you’re like me, you find one you like - buy a bunch of colors (usually black and white) and then struggle to find a new one when they eventually stop selling it. Same thing with jeans. They are one of the items I really only upgrade when my weight goes down and they are just ill-fitting. Rarely do I want to step outside the realm of my favorites, but that is when things can start to get…stale.

Whether you just rarely upgrade your basics or want to try them in new forms, it’s time to do it. No better time than the start of a new season to get the ball rolling especially if you’re on a spring cleaning kick - like me. Here are four wardrobe staples you need to upgrade or update this year.

The Bare Necessities

When is the last time you upgraded your undergarments and sleepwear? I know at a certain time I was utterly bombarded by TikToks informing me of the lifespan of underwear and well who doesn’t just really need a refresh? Feeling confident starts from beneath after all. While the idea of sleeping in a ratty old t-shirt can be appealing, a nice sleep set can do wonders.

Tees

The perfect tee can come in many forms and depends on individual style or preference. They go with anything from denim to skirts and they just help make outfits look effortlessly cool. Tees hold up really well so you can always get a favorite or two, but don’t let them get so worn in they look less than their best.

Stripes

Stripes likely aren’t considered a wardrobe basic or essential by some, but I have always believed having a good striped sweater and blouse was important to building outfits. It is a central piece of “French Girl Style” too. Stripes are playful and chic. If you’ve been waiting to add them to your wardrobe the time is now because there are many different ways to wear them and they fit with the preppier trend at the moment.

Jeans

Like I said before, upgrading my jeans is really something I only do when my weight goes down, they start to look unflattering, or I see a pair I just can’t live without. But frankly, one of the best things about denim are all the options. Options increase versatility and help create really stylish outfits that embrace knits, button-downs, and even basic (or graphic) tees. These days there are tons of different silhouettes and fits that allow you to embrace a trend you maybe haven’t tried before or stick with the trendproof straight and skinny for greater longevity.
