2021's Colors of the Year

Every year Pantone picks a color of the year. A color that defines the year ahead in everything from fashion to home decorating. With 2020 being less than stellar, Pantone chose two colors for 2021: Ultimate Grey and Illuminating Yellow. This isn’t exactly a new color combination. It’s been seen on runways in seasons past and just recently this shade of yellow made a huge statement on SS21 runways from Prada to Givenchy. Last year’s color had us all feeling a little blue, but these colors are sure to lift spirits in the year ahead.

To paraphrase Pantone’s explanation, these color choices reflect the societal changes we have undergone over the last year. Our mindset has become more local than global as our lives slowed down. Ultimate Grey is a strong color that calls to mind nature. Rocks..sand. Strong elements that have been around for centuries. Of course, we’ve all been wearing a lot of grey sweatpants too. Illuminating Yellow calls to our feeling that color is positive and hopeful. Just like how we started 2021 - feeling like there was something to look forward to like when the sun comes out on a cloudy day.

When it comes to fashion and home decor, the colors play off of each other. The brightness of the yellow illuminates the cold grey. And, when it comes to fashion, pairing grey with yellow makes yellow far more wearable. Trust me, I wore a yellow sweater to a class my second semester of college and that is how people remembered me - for better or worse. Find some yellow and grey outfit inspiration below and some pieces of both colors you can add to your wardrobe now.
