Horror Movie Style Icons
My name is Nicole and I (pretty secretly) love horror movies. I say this with one caveat, most new ones actually suck and I can’t ever take them seriously. So when I say horror movies or scary movies or whatever you want to call it, I typically mean a select grouping. That said, I feel like every time I talk about these movies, I’m always ranking them or recommending them. I think one thing that doesn’t get covered enough is the style in some of these movies.
Of course we all know the regular girl in a horror movie tropes but still a lot of good style to consider here. These movies span from the 1960s through 2016 and I chose characters/films that could easily be emulated (if you want to do such a thing).
Halloween
Halloween is an iconic horror movie in its own right. Laurie’s girl-next-door fall look takes a few transitions throughout the film but is genuinely something anyone can pull off all fall long. It’s a classic pairing. It’s easy. It uses multiple layered pieces that can be worn individually. Also suitable for when you’ve chosen to hide in a very compact closet while being chased by the boogeyman.
Rosemary’s Baby
Ah, who doesn’t love the classic story of a woman giving birth to Satan’s offspring? It’s made even better with the style. Rosemary wears pastels and printed mini dresses while the evil neighbors wear over the top, more exotic, embellished outfits. I mean we are talking blue eyeshadow here. Let that just wash over you. Possibly more frightening than a devil baby? Who can say for sure?
Night of the Living Dead
Okay, so Barbara only wears a trench coat for pretty much the entire movie, but still how classic is a trench coat? But literally all the 1960s outfits are on point. I would honestly wear them any day of the week…and luckily I won’t be faced with zombies while in a rural town. After all, they’re coming to get you…Barbara.
The Shining
Alright so wielding an ax isn’t exactly stylish, but nearly everything about The Shining is stylish. I’m talking about the carpets and all of the color pallets. Who could forget Danny’s iconic NASA sweater and those….twins. Okay…maybe that elevator is less stylish and more….terrifying. Either way, all of these 70s fashions anyone could pull off today. Turtlenecks, overalls, check patterns..the whole 9 yards.
I Know What You Did Last Summer
I bet you completely forgot this movie existed, huh? It might not be the best, but back in the 90s it was..the best October “sick day” from school movie. Plus if you’re gonna embrace the 90s fashions that have come back around, why not rock this Sarah Michelle Gellar look? I mean just look at that chain belt!
Scream
Truth be told, Scream made me never want to answer our landline phone in the 90s. This movie keeps the iconic 90s fashions coming. Could anyone get through the 90s without a plaid mini skirt? Highly unlikely.
Suspiria
Suspiria is hands down one of the best horror movies I’ve ever seen. I mean the original, not the remake from last year which I’m sure is..fine. The visuals in this movie are pretty stunning. There are a lot of feminine touches like the sheer layers, white ruffles, and dusty pastels.
