My Guide to Summer Basics
Ah, summer is officially here. I will admit summer was always much more fun as a kid. Sure, going to the beach, spending a day at the pool, or taking a long vacation is still fun, but it still feels entirely different. Being from the desert, the temperatures are much higher (duh) so when it comes to getting dressed, you have to be strategic. This is because by midday you can end up looking like a sweaty tomato. Denim jackets and light sweaters really save you when it comes to air conditioning, but don't really serve any other purpose. I find trying to style outfits pretty difficult during summer. That's not to say I don't come up with some great outfits. It's just much harder because there isn't anything chic about messing with your clothes when getting out of the hot car (or when you're stuck sweating in a chair for a while). That's why I love wardrobe basics. They really take the guesswork out of getting dressed. Plus, there are ways to update them with each new season or year. I always find myself upgrading my slide sandals, sunglasses, and denim shorts. Once you know which staples work best for you, it's really easy to upgrade them with newer, trendier versions. And one thing I really love is not having to worry about purchasing something I will only get one wear out of. Something I personally find happens when I insist on embracing the one seasonal item everyone has.
Below are four basic categories that help build any summer wardrobe. Each is filled with stylish pieces that are the key to dressing great when it's miserable outside.
