Monthly Mix: Halloween 2017

A few days ago I stumbled upon an article in my social media feed pondering how Halloween became a months long celebration rather than just one solid day. I can't find the article now, but I never considered such an idea because Halloween has always been a gigantic deal in my family. It was always almost like my dad's second Christmas. I didn't pick up the nickname Wednesday Addams for just any ol' reason. I just love Halloween. There's a weird creepiness in the air and (usually) it's not 100 degrees out anymore so I can finally enjoy all my favorite chilly weather things. Like a cozy sweater & joggers while watching Halloween on AMC. It's a tradition, you know.

So it's really no surprise the monthly mix here is always Halloween themed. I think I've made about 12 or so Halloween mixes over the past few years. In the beginning they centered around parties and pleasing the masses. But I eventually decided that I like a much creepier sounding mix and started incorporating horror scores and synthesizer based instrumentals. You know the ones where they just make you feel like you're in some horror movie while doing every day life things (just try driving to John Carpenter's Halloween Theme and try not to feel a little heightened anxiety). This year is really no different. I tried to mix together some modern stuff with some lesser known classics. If you look at any Halloween mixes on popular platforms they all contain pretty much the same things. So I tried to avoid recreating those song for song. Still there's a couple really well-known additions here (like the Monster Mash) because 9 times out of 10, I'm told to "shut up and play the hits."

Hey, you can't please everybody, right?
