Apres-Ski: Winter Destinations I Might Actually Enjoy
I know it might seem odd for me to even be writing a blog post about winter, snow, and skiing, given I can’t stand being cold, I think snow is fun for 2 minutes, and I can’t ski. You’re right it is odd, but after chatting with my family about winter activities and watching Winter House, I concluded, that it might be fun so here we are.
Honestly, no matter what destination I chose to visit, I would be the apres-ski vibe over everything. I just tend to prefer the cozy warmth of a mountainside lodge over the thrill of speeding down the slopes. I know I’m not alone. Even if you’re someone who appreciates the après ski scene as much as the skiing itself, I’ve done the research and compiled a list of some of the best ski destinations around the world. A sort of Apres-Ski bucket list if you will. These destinations were my favorites of all the ones I looked through for a variety of reasons and each location offers a unique blend of winter sports and après ski charm. So, pack your winter gear, hit the slopes, and indulge in the warmth and camaraderie that make après ski experiences unforgettable.
Mont-Tremblant, Québec
Nestled in the heart of the Laurentian Mountains, Mont-Tremblant is a picturesque destination known for its charming village. It rises over 2,000 feet and covers over 700 acres. It’s more quaint than many of these other destinations, but that is exactly what one wants from a European-eque ski resort in Quebec. There is also quite the apres-ski scene. After a day of skiing on the slopes, explore the cobblestone streets lined with shops, restaurants, and lively bars like the Le P’tit Caribou, a hotspot with a lake-front terrace where the nightlife is known to go into the wee hours of the morning. One must-visit for the quintessential apres-ski is Le Shack, with great views of Place St. Bernard and the ski slopes not to mention a crackling fireplace.
St. Moritz, Switzerland
St. Moritz is synonymous with luxury and elegance, making it an ideal destination for those who want to combine world-class skiing with opulent après ski experiences. It is the oldest winter holiday resort in the world so it’s pretty much earned its exclusive reputation. Located nearly 6,000 feet above sea level, St. Moritz sees sunshine 322 days a year and has, what I hear, is called a “champagne climate.” Indulge in gourmet dining, sip champagne at exclusive lounges, and take in breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps. There are plenty of world-class hotels and chic shopping that draw celebrities and royalty alike. Not only does it have a reputation for being an upscale destination, it is just as famous for its unique events like the Snow Polo World Cup and even the ICE car show.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy
Cortina d’Ampezzo is a historic town that grew into a popular ski destination after the 1956 Winter Olympics. While the skiing is exceptional, the town's après ski offerings are equally enticing. Located 2 hours from Venice, this destination isn’t too remote but still has a low-key vibe. A unique feature compared to many of the flashier locales in this post. Enjoy the Italian tradition of a leisurely aperitivo, where you can sip on local wines and savor delectable antipasti. The cozy atmosphere and stunning mountain views make Cortina a must-visit for après ski enthusiasts.
Stowe, Vermont
Experience classic New England charm at Stowe, Vermont. A town that is apparently straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. With its historic village and iconic covered bridges, Stowe provides a unique après ski setting. Explore local breweries, indulge in comfort food at quaint eateries, and immerse yourself in the welcoming community atmosphere that defines Stowe's après ski scene. The Matterhorn is a can’t miss with local craft brews and comfort food perfect for after skiing. Stowe has a reputation as one of Vermont’s most picturesque ski towns so even if you’re not into skiing, do it for the ‘gram.
Obertauern, Austria
Obertauern combines Austrian hospitality with a lively après ski scene. 56 miles south of Salzburg, Obertauren is a bit different than the typical chalets with its wild wind which invites skiers who love a little thrill with their runs. The village itself is compact, making it easy to explore the various bars and clubs. Dance to live music, savor traditional Austrian cuisine and experience the vibrant energy that defines Obertauern's après ski culture. Plus, it was one of the filming locations for the Beatles movie Help! as if you needed just one more reason to visit.
Mammoth Mountain, California
A little closer to home and known for its vast terrain and reliable snowfall, Mammoth Mountain in California also boasts a vibrant après ski scene. A quick 5-hour drive outside LA, Mammoth Mountain has benefited from the storms drenching California over the past few months. They have gotten a record amount of snow just waiting to be explored. There is a lively village, where you can find diverse dining options, craft breweries, and live entertainment. Whether you're a skier or just looking to enjoy the social aspects of winter sports, Mammoth Mountain has something for everyone.
Ruka, Finland
Ruka offers a bit of a unique ski experience. They have over 200 days of snow per year not to mention snow machines that keep things powdery and white for visitors. Embrace the Arctic wilderness and enjoy activities like husky safaris and northern lights excursions. There are snowmobile trails and even cross-country skiing for those who enjoy the thrill. After a day of skiing, unwind in traditional Finnish saunas and cozy log cabins, creating a magical après ski experience unlike any other.
Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Steamboat is known as Ski Town USA for a reason. It’s a down-to-earth type of retreat renowned for its Western hospitality and inviting après ski culture. There are plenty of beginner slopes and ways to enjoy the Champagne Powder. From cowboy-style saloons to modern gastropubs, the town offers a diverse range of après ski options. Relax in natural hot springs, enjoy live music, and relish the genuine warmth of Steamboat Springs' après ski scene. Steamboat Springs is much more affordable than other nearby ski destinations and it offers plenty of amenities that can suit a variety of different types of people. There is something for everyone including an ice rink at a new multi-million dollar redevelopment at the base of the mountain.
Alta, Utah
If you're seeking world-class powder and a laid-back après ski atmosphere, Alta in Utah is the perfect destination. It’s part of the reason Utah’s license plates have bragged about being the “Greatest Snow on Earth” since the 1980s. Known for its exceptional snow conditions, Alta offers a relaxed après ski scene with cozy lodges and a community-focused vibe. Enjoy local craft beers, unwind by the fire, and share stories of the day's adventures. They get over 500 inches of snow person season and it reigns supreme as the best of the 4 main resorts surrounding Salt Lake City.
Snowmass Village, Colorado
Snowmass Village offers a perfect blend of world-class skiing and après ski festivities. In recent years it has become a celebrity favorite. Snowmass Base Village is a popular spot with an ice skating rink, holiday pop-up events, restaurants, shows, and even workshops. There is plenty of skiing to be had as it is one of Aspen’s four mountains with a variety of options that make it a hit with everyone. Many of the dining options rival those found in Europe meaning we can be transported just about anywhere by food alone.
Riksgränsen, Sweden
For someone who isn’t overly excited about the cold or snow, I don’t know if I should venture to the Arctic Circle and discover Riksgränsen, Sweden's northernmost ski resort. But, apparently, it has cloud-like drifts and frost-rimmed forests making it a gorgeous setting. There is snowshoeing and even a fleet of sled dogs to play with. Known for its exceptional late-season skiing and awe-inspiring natural beauty, Riksgränsen offers a more remote and serene après ski experience. Enjoy the tranquility and late sunset of the Arctic landscape and the simplicity of après ski in this unique destination.
Courchevel, France
Courchevel sounds like an absolute dream. It is located within the largest ski area of the world and has multiple interconnected villages to visit. Known for its upscale resorts and Michelin-starred restaurants, Courchevel is a haven for both skiing enthusiasts and après ski connoisseurs. Explore the chic boutiques, indulge in gourmet meals, and unwind in luxurious spa facilities. The villages even have heated pavement which is a luxury we all need. The après ski scene in Courchevel is as diverse as it is sophisticated, ensuring there's something for everyone - and you won’t want to go anywhere else.
Val Thorens, France
As the highest ski resort in Europe, Val Thorens offers not only breathtaking panoramic views but also a lively après ski scene. With a mix of bars, clubs, and cozy lounges, Val Thorens caters to a diverse crowd. It is a winter sports destination built with purpose including over 300 miles of slopes and access to all of the Three Valleys. The surrounding villages are pretty, and low-key and offer delicious treats like hot chocolate that can be enjoyed while looking off at the mountains. Enjoy the French Alps ambiance and the camaraderie that comes with après ski in this high-altitude paradise.
Saas-Fee, Switzerland
Saas-Fee offers a more laid-back après ski experience. It is a charming village with traditional Alpine architecture. Unwind in quaint bars and enjoy Swiss hospitality at its finest. This car-free village has incredible authentic charm with narrow streets and sheds. Winter is very snowy despite its 300 days of sunshine a year. But that isn’t all, Saas-Fee starts ski season in July with over 10 miles of glacier skiing. Saas-Fee is truly a winter sports travel must for everything from ice climbing to tobogganing and even the bobsled run! If winter sports aren’t your thing, Saas-Fee has the world’s tallest revolving restaurant at over 11,000 feet and a signature of gnocchi and goulash sauce, if you’re into that sort of thing. The surrounding peaks create a magical setting, perfect for those who appreciate a more relaxed and intimate après ski ambiance.
