10 Airbnbs to Add to Your Travel List
Over the past couple years as I started to travel more, I’ve started making a laundry list of must visit places. You know, like normal people probably have been doing for a century or longer. I’m one of those people who loves a good hotel stay, but sometimes the travel accommodations are more of a necessity rather than part of the experience. Traveling is all about exploring exciting places, new cultures, and making memories. Why not make where one stays part of the adventure?
I definitely have read an article or two about gorgeous and unique Airbnb’s lately so I thought I would share a few of my favorites that are worth adding to any travel list. They are eye-catching and both architecturally and geographically unique which means no matter what vibe your next vacation has there is probably going to be one you’ll want to book straight away.
Flea Windmill
Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel - Acores, Portugal
I should be able to just point out it’s a windmill and have that be the main selling point - at least for me. But in case you need a bit more, this spot is a 19th-century windmill on the western coast of Portugal. It has a kitchenette, a cute living room, and a spiral staircase that leads to a king-sized bedroom with incredible views of the ocean. This Wes Anderson-esque spot has an expansive garden with trees and flowers and even additional housing for more guests.
Greek Getaway
Plathrithias, Ithaki Island, Greece
Enjoy Greece on the hillside with sea views and breezes all day long. This spot is serene and is decorated with gorgeous muted earth tones that fit the vibe perfectly. It is super bright, airy, and perfect for a cozy getaway. The island of Ithaki is known to be quiet and more intimate with beaches and a fishing village for plenty of activities and exploring. There are stunning views through the patio area and also a homegrown garden to enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Casa Blanca
Sitges, Catalunya, Spain
This spot has all the boho vibes and is just 45 minutes outside of Barcelona. It is located on the top floor and boasts an incredible view of the Mediterranean ocean. There are sunchairs and an outdoor shower to enjoy. It is a 10-minute walk from the San Sebastian Beach. The space is bright and airy with the perfect combination of neutral colors. There are also chic fixtures and unique elements that really bring the European aesthetic to life.
Jacques Prévert’s 12th Century Apartment
Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur, France
This apartment is one of Condé Nast Traveler’s favorite Airbnbs in France because the design is a mixture of old world and modern luxury. This 12th-century apartment has been fully restored and has all of the history and charm Provencal is known for. The hot spots of Nice and other Cote d’Azur locals are nearby, but there is so much appeal to enjoying the sunshine on a jasmine-lined terrace. Plus getting to stay at the former home of a cinematic legend doesn’t hurt.
Paraty Forest House
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
This rental has won an iF Design Award, and when you look at it, you can see why. It is situated between Sao Paulo and Rio which makes it the perfect place to gain some peace and quiet. The design leans into its forest lushness by using wood paneling and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for impeccable views. There is a private waterfall and natural swimming pool for guests to enjoy in this little slice of paradise.
Moroccan Riad
Marrakesh, Morocco
This Moroccan Riad features all of the traditional elements like patterned tiles and vibrant colors. There is fine detail everywhere you look. This spot mentions the calming and relaxing atmosphere that is just minutes away from all of the must-see locations and activities Marrakesh has to offer. But even if that isn’t your jam, this Riad has an expansive courtyard with a shared patio filled with relaxing lounge chairs for guests’ enjoyment.
Private Trullo
Locorotondo, Apulia, Italy
A Trullo is a dry stone hut with a cone-shaped roof specific to the Apulia region of Italy and a couple of other places. These huts were usually constructed as temporary structures or storehouses although occasionally they would be used as housing for agricultural workers. Staying in a Trullo feels almost dreamy when you look at the entire of this particular spot. It is settled in the countryside of Locorotondo where there are olive groves, mills, and a bright blue sea - not to mention some gorgeous sunsets.
Norman Lykes House Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright
Phoenix, Arizona
This home has actually been for sale for a while until they can find someone who plans to appreciate the architectural gem in the rural area of Phoenix. This three-bedroom home was designed for Aimee and Norman Lykes by Frank Lloyd Wright and his apprentice John Rattenbury - who completed the design after Wright’s death. It is one of the 14 circular homes Wright designed with a futuristic design with views of Palm Canyon. The materials used to create the home were globally sourced from the Philippines to India and Italy. The selling price is just over 8.9 million dollars, but for now, I guess we can all just enjoy the outdoor pool during our temporary stay.
Historic Laurel Canyon Hilltop
Los Angeles, California
This home is historic because it is believed John Lennon and Yoko Ono once lived there. But it stands out these days for its incredible views of downtown Los Angeles and its stunning mid-century design. There are four terraces for taking in the views and a private tram to transport you to the historic hilltop. The host also mentions all of the furniture are original Dutch pieces which makes this one well worth the journey through Los Angeles and its narrow uphill streets - you know, as if the music history wasn’t enough for you.
Swaines Cottage
Rudgwick, England
Swaines Cottage was built in 1352 and could be one of the oldest English cottages listed for rental. There are original touches like diamond-pane windows and ceiling beams. This four-bedroom cottage is halfway from London to the southern coast. The spot has a piano, cozy sitting nook, is located near pubs, and is great for dog walks. It is situated on a leafy dirt road that shows off England’s unique and romantic landscape.
