A Kitchen Backsplash Appreciation Post
Kitchen backsplashes are probably one of the most underrated design elements of a home. At least that’s what you’d think before watching 17 million hours of HGTV and home renovation shows. Only then do you start to realize the time, effort, and choices there are for backsplashes only to get incredibly frustrated when 9 times out of 10 a homeowner is going to choose white subway tile. Of course, they choose that. Why show any slight bit of personality in a room where you spend so much time?! Growing up, the area now reserved for art pieces known as backsplash was mainly used to hang kitschy little Italian-themed kitchen signs or pot holders. But these days backsplash is a way to add a little something extra to the kitchen without overwhelming the entire room.
Designers consider kitchen backsplash to be almost like jewelry. There is an option for just about everyone and every aesthetic. It’s all about personal preference. Some like to be bold and use colorful accents and tiles made of painted glass. Others, like those on home renos, who are going for more understated, classic, and vast appeal end up with white subway tiles. 2023’s trends lean more towards the natural elements much like in interior design. Natural stones and unique color cabinets are becoming more popular as are handmade tiles with character. These handmade tiles give a more eclectic feel and design. One super bold trend I’ve read about recently is the “counter splash.” A “counter splash” is where the material used for the backsplash is the same as the countertop and typically features large, dramatic veining. Talk about a super bold, dramatic, and beautiful statement. Of course, subway tile will always remain a trend because it is classic, has just become a design standard, and really has the appeal to a large audience which makes selling a home infinitely easier. But I would implore people to be more daring and bold. Don’t believe me? Just keep scrolling and see for yourself!
