1 Item, 3 Ways: Slip Dress
Believe it or not, there was a time slips were worn underneath clothes to ensure they hung properly. An item I saw tons of in the drawers and closets of my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother growing up. Something I actually dreaded having to wear at some point as an adult because it just seemed to be an extra thing women have to do. But then at some point in the 1990s, the slip dress became an outfit all on it’s own as women experimented and celebrities and It girls brought it mainstream. To me, the slip dress is a closet essential especially for spring and summer. They are light, airy, and a have that hint of sexy that works no matter if you’re grabbing coffee in the middle of the day or attending a more fancy function like a wedding. In 2022 with the 90s and Y2K style being all the rage again, it’s not really a surprise the slip dress has been high up there on Instagram feeds and modern day IT girls.
Slip dresses of the 90s had sultry, form-fitting styles by the likes of Calvin Klein and Versace made out of silk, satin, and even chiffon. They were worn by everyone from Princess Diana to Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy to Winona Ryder and Naomi Campbell. These days the dresses are much more of the same, but have interesting silhouettes that allow the wearer to show off their best assets, look stylish, and stay cool in the summer heat. The best part about slip dresses is they are versatile enough to be worn through any season because they look good layered, with a blazer, or a cool leather jacket.
