Q&A: What Is Your Hair Routine?

Oh hi all natural Snapchat

For 2019 I’m introducing a new Q&A column to this blog. Find out details of how you can ask me a question or request at the bottom of this post.

I get asked about my hair a lot. Even my hair dresser refuses to cut it above a certain length despite having so much fun dying it from time to time (it’s been every color of the rainbow). So much so i’m starting to feel like it’s my best feature. Okay, maybe that’s being a little overdramatic. But I truly do get asked about it so much. Everything from how did I get it to grow so long to how do I keep it shiny and soft. So given someone requested this blog post, I thought I would oblige and tell you what my hair routine is. So without further introduction, despite this being fairly personal, how I maintain my hair.

Washing + Drying

First off, I only wash my hair up to 3 times a week. This is a little more than recommended but I suffer from dry scalp. Dry scalp is a thing that is not good friends with working out so I have to wash my hair more than I would like. For the spare days in between, I, much like others, live on dry shampoo and a homemade spray of apple cider vinegar and water. The apple cider vinegar is a spot treatment that reduces the itching dry scalp can cause. I switch shampoo every wash switching between weightless/volumizing and cleansing. Cleansing is always necessary after a really intense workout. I NEVER use a hair dyer. In fact, I don’t even own one. I always am sure to wash my hair in plenty of time for it to air dry or overnight. Overnight drying is a tricky game because it dries every which way and can cause unwanted kinks and texture. After washing, when damp, I always apply a leave-in conditioner and brush/comb my hair to detangle. This protects my hair from breakage and allows me to control how much natural texture comes through as it dries. After this, a hairbrush NEVER touches my hair again. Seriously, it’s the only time I brush my hair.

STYLING

When it comes to styling I only use heat on days when it is absolutely necessary. The days where I have plans or have to dress up for work. This lessens the amount of heat being added to my hair. But when I do style, always wavy curls, I use a heat protectant. I apply Ghost Oil to my hair which adds extra heat protection and other times I use a regular drugstore spray. As I said, I curl my hair and then distress my curls with a texture styler. This adds a little something extra without completely ruining the curls or making them look flat. Finally, I sleep on a satin pillowcase. A satin pillowcase protects your styling and reduces breakage. Plus, in the desert it keeps your body cooler when the temperatures get out of control.
